Telling More Than Time
A brief look into the beginnings of the American based JORD wood watch company and the style sense of their Chief Marketing Manager, Paul Saitta.
JORD is an accessory line, focused on developing pieces made of natural materials for the modern consumer. Before we developed into JORD, we were just a group of designers and marketers who wanted to create a watch line that would appeal to a spectrum of styles and personalities. That desire really stemmed from our own selfish tendencies. In terms of fashion, our group is very diverse, and we each wanted to accommodate our own look.
With that inability to have a singular aesthetic or direction our original design process and the resulting sketches came off as more Frankenstein than high fashion. When we were discussing a way to bring more cohesion to the line we realized the most viable solution was to choose a material that, in and of itself, would be as striking as the design, regardless of the style. Our decision to create the watches using natural wood was our method of connecting the dots.
The grain offers a subtlety of pattern, and the natural finish provides a matte backdrop so we can incorporate more varied textures and tones into each design. The natural qualities of the wood are so grounding and foundational to each series that we are able to play with color and sheen on the faces without worrying about overwhelming the eye.
The wood has been critical in allowing us to create our watches for the new male consumer. Men in fashion are more confident and more individual in their style, taking classic looks and fine tuning them to fit their own personalities. Men can easily deviate from an otherwise pedestrian look by wearing a great pair of shoes, an unusual belt, or an eye catching watch.
For myself, I’ve always gravitated towards clean, simple lines, utilitarian looks, bold but not busy; a true American sportswear aesthetic. That’s why the Sully series is my go to and the two-toned black sandalwood and maple piece is my standard.
This watch has the capability to make a very simple outfit look put together. There are days where it’s all I can do to get a clean shirt and a pair of pants on – the Sully saves me on those days. I consider the Sully to be the Henley of my watch collection. The style is relaxed, but it always looks great.
Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that our Sully series is unisex, and more than once I’ve had to retrieve this off my girlfriend’s wrist. Part of what I love about quintessential American sportswear is the androgynous nature of it all – and our Sully is no exception.
