Once considered an eccentric hiccup in the fashion industry, the wide leg jean is now a staple in the world of men’s trousers. The real trend began in 2016, picked up steam in 2017, and now has exploded on runways in Paris, New York, and Shanghai. Wide leg jeans in 2019 can only become more popular and ubiquitous.
The why of it is simply because it’s a comfier fit. Plus the new quality fabrics from clothing mills in Madrid and Birmingham have made them so easy to care for that even a man can keep them clean and nice looking. The tapered ankle of a pair of wide leg jeans puts the spotlight on the calves, where women traditionally reign supreme – but not anymore! Men wear them in technical fibers, wool, and cotton, and find them roomier yet stylish for any occasion – formal or not.
Can they be worn to work? It depends on the work environment. For blue collar work they are a natural. For the office, it’s trickier. The best plan is to always see what the boss, whether man or woman, is wearing, and then to copy that dress code. Although young males can usually get away with being more casual with their dress than anyone else. A ruched waist, or button-up waist, can still look professional when worn with elan.
Looking cool while feeling comfy is the newest fashion trend.
