When I was a kid, I hated naps!  Even now, I try to stay up as much as possible.  I have serious “fomo”.  I feel like when I’m sleeping, I’m missing out on something.  My parents say I have always been like this.

But most parents would agree that their kids need naps.  A few new studies from University of Pennsylvania and Cal Irvine seem to confirm what many parents have known all along.

In one study of about 3,000 kids between the ages of 10 to 12, they found a strong correlation with naps and happiness, self-control and even IQ.  In fact, the strongest correlation was with academic achievement and the 12 year olds who took naps.  That definitelty seems to be true with my four kids.  The one that never missed a chance to take a nap, had the most success in school.

Lots of kids need more sleep.  In the Penn study, they found that 20% of children are affected by lack of sleep.  They noted that this daytime drowsiness had negative effects on cognition, positive emotions, and physical health and performance.

Interestingly, they found even more benefits from midday napping than from a full 8 hours of sleep during the night.

The benefits of naps and academic achievement is even more pronounced in adolescence.  So when your teenager gets home from school and immediately passes out on the couch, the research shows that it’s probably a good thing to let them sleep for a while.

Don’t assume naps are just for kids. Numerous studies have also found benefits for adults with as little as a 30 minute nap.
