Maintaining relationships while traveling

Maintaining strong and lasting relationships when one partner is constantly traveling on business is a challenging proposition. Long periods of time away from each other is not the best way to deepen a relationship; and there are many sadder and wiser business travelers, both men and women, who have learned, to their cost, that absence doesn’t necessarily make the heart grow fonder. It takes planning, compromise, and commitment. And maybe a little luck. Basically, there are only two options available for the business traveler if he or she wants to keep a relationship alive and healthy. Either figure out how to work a long distance relationship, or bring the partner along on business trips. Bringing someone along on a professional trip can be easier than expected, when using a professional corporate rental strategy. A fully equipped and stylish corporate rental can turn any business trip into a pleasurable jaunt for a couple as well.

Working away from home for extended periods of time requires some thoughtful planning and action when there is another person involved. And probably some pure cannabidiol won’t hurt either.

For instance …

Clear and constant communication is the name of the game, in both business relationships and in personal ones. When long trips away from home become necessary, it’s time to be completely honest with a partner about expectations during the long absence. Attitudes towards travel need to be discussed long before any extended trips take place. Discussing the inevitable feelings of being left alone, stranded almost, or being constantly uprooted, need to be acknowledged and worked out. Frank talk about various healthy coping mechanisms will reassure both parties that the relationship can survive and even grow stronger. Trust on both sides is, of course, the number one consideration.

Use a calendar and scheduling apps

In today’s world it’s not unusual for both partners in a personal relationship to have commitments and obligations that can pull them apart if they’re not careful. Careful scheduling and calendaring can minimize the potential chaos and disappointment. Knowing ahead of time the where and when of professional activities can help a couple strategize their time together and minimize the stress of separation.

Being together, but separate

When distance intervenes, plan to do the same things at the same time. For instance, if a couple has a favorite TV show they watch together when at home, they can plan to watch the show at the same time although not in the same room. Afterwards, a phone call or Skype chat will let them talk about it, which creates a real feeling of still being able to bond about their likes and dislikes.

Send a surprise

Do the tourist thing and send a postcard. Or, better yet, discover what the distant city is noted for, something unique and local, like a food delicacy, and send a sample back home with an affectionate note. In most cases the tackier the surprise, like a teaspoon with the city’s name engraved on it, the funnier it can be, breaking the tension of separation and even starting an amusing collection of travel memorabilia. How can any relationship survive without a sturdy sense of humor?

Make the most of time at home

When partners can manage to spend time at home, it’s vital to spend as much of that time as possible together. Eating together. Doing household chores together. Going out together. Just plain BEING together, and not sitting on the same couch texting friends or playing a game on the smartphone. Forget the social media and socialize with each other instead.

Finally, give careful thought to taking your significant other along and renting a corporate room or suite. Turn the business trip into a sort of mini-vacation. It’s a win-win for both partners.
